Cathy Green Named President of Food Lion Family of Banners
2/2/2010
Green will oversee Food Lion, Bloom, Harveys and Reid’s
SALISBURY, N.C. – Food Lion announced today that Cathy Green assumes leadership of the Food Lion family of banners, which includes Food Lion, Bloom, Harveys and Reid’s. The announcement is part of a new U.S. structure announced last month by Delhaize Group.

In her new role, Green will lead all banner operations for the Food Lion family, including store financial performance, merchandising, pricing, customer service and marketing.

“Cathy is an outstanding leader with significant retail expertise,” said Ron Hodge, CEO of Delhaize America Operations. “Her in-depth knowledge of the grocery industry will significantly benefit the Food Lion family of banners. She is a leader who operates with the customer in mind, focused on delivering excellent service, quality products and lower prices to our customers. Her leadership will be visible to customers and associates through her drive and passion for the business.”

Green most recently served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Food Lion LLC, where she was responsible for overseeing operations for Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys and Reid’s. Prior to being named COO, Green served Food Lion as senior vice president for the chain’s northern retail operations and previously as senior vice president of fresh merchandising, distribution and quality assurance. Green joined Food Lion in 2002 from its sister grocery chain, Hannaford Supermarkets, where she held the title of vice president of fresh merchandising.

“I look forward to delivering the great prices that customers in our 11-state operating area have come to expect from the Food Lion family of banners,” said Green. “In today’s economy, our consumers are placing great demands on their grocery store, and we are here to serve their needs and save them money every time they shop our stores. We remain strongly committed to serving our customers and ensuring we deliver a rewarding and meaningful shopping experience.”

Green’s position as one of the top leaders in the industry is evidenced by her being named a 2007 Top Woman in Grocery by Progressive Grocer, one of Supermarket News’ Power 50 in 2009 and in January 2010, she was named one of Mass Market Retailer’s Most Influential Women in Mass Market Retailing. Green recently served as chair of the Steering Committee of the Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI), working to create alignment among various constituents participating in the program and ensuring guidelines and milestones were set for the initiative to be implemented by the food industry. She continues to be involved with PTI’s progress and was awarded The Packer’s 2008 Produce Marketer of the Year award because of her work with PTI.

Green also serves on the national Board of Directors for the Network of Executive Women (NEW) and is a member of the national Board of Governors for Children’s Miracle Network. Green holds a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing from the University of Maine and completed coursework in strategic retail management at the College of William and Mary.

SALISBURY, N.C. (January 19, 2010) — Now through Feb. 2, Food Lion and Bloom shoppers can earn up to $10 in free groceries every time they buy private brand products. Each time customers shop at Food Lion or Bloom during the Private Brand Super Sale and purchase at least four Food Lion, Bloom or Home 360 products using their Food Lion MVP or Bloom Breeze card, they earn a money-saving coupon. Customers get $1 in coupons for the first four private brand products they purchase and 25 cents back for each additional private brand product they buy – up to $10 – during the promotion. During the first week of the program, customers earned more than $180,000 in free groceries.

“Food Lion LLC wants to put money back in customers’ pockets by rewarding our loyal customers,” said Shavonne Clark, Food Lion’s director of Private Brands for Delhaize Group – U.S. “Our sales trends show consumers are using more private brand products, and this is one way we can thank customers who use Food Lion, Bloom and Home 360 private brand products. We also want to provide additional incentive for customers who may not have tried our private brand products.”

The promotion allows customers to use their MVP or Breeze loyalty cards to take advantage of lower prices available by purchasing their favorite private brand products. The coupons are redeemable on customers’ next grocery bill. Customers can view full details of the promotion online at www.FoodLion.com or at www.ShopBloom.com.

Food Lion LLC Opens Company’s First Environmentally Friendly Grocery Store in Columbia, S.C.
12/10/2009

Store Will Be Located in Columbia’s Summit Commons Shopping Center and will be the state’s first LEED-Certified Grocery Store

Food Lion LLC continued its commitment to environmental sustainability today by opening the company’s first and South Carolina’s first environmentally friendly grocery store. The store, located in the Summit Commons Shopping Center, will seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification, having been designed and built to these strict guidelines.

The store, located at 4730 Hard Scrabble Road, features environmentally friendly construction and energy-efficient services, such as:

  • High-efficiency lighting that dims lights based on natural sunlight in the store.
  • LED lighting in the frozen food cases.
  • Bike racks and preferred parking for low-emitting vehicles.
  • Low-flow and sensor-activated water fixtures in restrooms.
  • Bathroom partitions made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled material, such as juice, milk and water bottles.
  • Native plant species that minimize irrigation requirements, such as the Shumard Oak planted at the Groundbreaking Ceremony on July 14, 2009.
  • Enhanced air quality for associates and customers from the use of low-toxicity materials and proactive management plans used throughout construction to ensure optimal indoor air quality.
  • Environmental education via kiosks and signage throughout the store.
  • Purchasing more than 50 percent of building materials manufactured within 500 miles of the store’s location. This helped boost the local economy and reduce energy expended on transportation. The construction materials had 25 percent recycled content, and 50 percent of the wood was Forest Stewardship Council Certified.
  • Strong waste management plans, which diverted more than 85 percent of construction waste from landfills through recycling.
  • Customer and associate recycling programs at the store.

“Food Lion LLC is committed to protecting the environment and reducing energy consumption through green building construction and other energy-saving measures,” said Kyle Mitchell, vice president of store development. “By building the first LEED grocery store in our company’s history and in South Carolina, we are reducing energy costs by more than 20 percent compared to a typical supermarket as well as conserving 44 percent more water. We have been a leader in the energy and environmental sector for many years and have one of the most advanced retail energy conservation programs in the country. For nearly a decade, Food Lion has been dedicated to numerous sustainability initiatives, such as energy conservation and reducing carbon dioxide emissions throughout its 11-state footprint, reducing its energy consumption by more than 25 percent since 2000 or 2.61 trillion BTUs.”

Food Lion’s first green store is approximately 35,000 square feet and employs approximately 50 associates. In South Carolina, Food Lion has 146 stores and employs more than 7,700 associates.

Food Lion is also involved in a number of environmentally friendly initiatives, including encouraging customers to use reusable bags and recycling significant amounts of paper and plastic every year. Since the second quarter of 2009, the company distributed more than 700,000 reusable bags to customers.

Customers can view the construction of Food Lion’s environmentally friendly store as well as the educational kiosk, or read more about Food Lion’s environmental initiatives, at www.foodlion.com/greenstore.

SALISBURY, N.C. — On Nov. 11, Food Lion LLC kicks off its seventh annual “Hunger Has a Cure” campaign to support local food banks affiliated with Feeding America. The campaign, which allows customers to purchase ready-made food boxes or donate food in bins, runs through Dec. 30.

“We believe that, as a grocer, we are responsible for doing what we can to help our neighbors who are struggling to feed their families,” said Kyna Foster, director of Community Affairs at Food Lion LLC. “The need for food assistance is at an all-time high and we are proud to work with Feeding America to help eliminate hunger in our communities.”

The ready-made food boxes contain eight items, enough to create four different family meals and are available at Food Lion, Bottom Dollar Food, Harveys and Reid’s stores for $4.99 each. All stores will have a designated food-collection area, where customers can place the food boxes or other non-perishable items.

In addition, stores throughout the company are planning special events and contributions to the campaign.

Through efforts such as this annual campaign, as well as year-round food donations, Food Lion annually donates approximately 21 million pounds of food, valued at more than $35 million, to Feeding America.

“We have a long-standing partnership with Feeding America,” added Foster. “Since 2000, we have donated more than 200 million pounds of food to Feeding America and its affiliated food banks.” For more than 50 years, Food Lion LLC has served as a caring neighbor and strong corporate citizen in the communities in which it operates. Through corporate and foundation giving, campaigns carried out by its more than 1,300 stores, local programs and individual associate involvement, Food Lion LLC supports communities and numerous nonprofit organizations. In 2008, Food Lion LLC donated more than 21 million pounds of food and gave more than $5.2 million through foundation and community giving.
